Sensor-to-PC Connection Made Easy with DSC-USB Strain Gauge Digitiser

What is a DSC-USB? The DSC-USB strain gauge digitiser is the easiest and most cost effective way of converting a transducer signal into a digital input ready for connection to your PC using a spare USB port for live monitoring and logging of data. The DSC-USB will work with any full-bridge strain gauge sensor and can also be modified to work with 0-5Vdc signals from other sensors such as LVDTs, displacement sensors, pressure transducers and torque transducers.  The USB port powers the transducer and the digitiser so no external power supplies are required unless you are using a non-strain gauge sensor (0-5Vdc input). To complement the DSC-USB is a free piece of software, the DSC Toolkit.  The Toolkit allows you to […]

Load Pins and Position Sensors used for Antarctic Research

Applied Measurements needed to design and manufacture a pair of custom load pins for the university that could compensate for temperatures as low as -30degC. The load pin also had a built in ICA4S amplifier that could give a 4-20mA output for them to use to monitor the drilling forces.

Applied Measurements Builds Weighing System for Packaged Biomass Plantrooms

The weighing systems comprise of between 6 and 8 silo mount-style load cell weighing assemblies depending on the size of the plant, all of which are then wired into a bespoke junction box. The signal from the junction box feeds into an Intuitive2-L panel mounted digital display that provides a local weight reading in the biomass plantroom.

The Ultimate in Load Cell Design Flexibility from Applied Measurements

Here at Applied Measurements Ltd we are proud of our extensive range of standard load cells.  These cover ranges less than 1000grams up to 1000 tonnes via our CCD range of column load cells and form a superb basis from which we design and build countless customised load cells. As a UK-based transducer manufacturer boasting over 50 years of design experience within our company we build all manner of load, force, torque, displacement and pressure sensors from scratch according to our customers’ design or modification requirements.  Modification and new design requests are a daily occurrence so our sensor repertoire is constantly growing. Read on for a couple of recent examples of using a stock item and modifying it to our […]

ICA Strain Gauge Amplifier Offers Excellence in Miniature

The ICA amplifier is our favourite small strain gauge amplifier.  With its small overall size of 19.5mm diameter and 7.6mm height and variety of analogue output options including 0-5Vdc / 0-10Vdc / +/-10Vdc and 4-20mA it is a truly flexible device.  These features coupled with superb long-term reliability make the ICA amplifier a priceless addition to any strain gauge-based sensor or system.  With a <±0.02% non-linearity and the ability to operate in temperatures from -40ºC to +85ºC the ICA amplifier is a truly versatile little unit. We often use the ICA as a small in-line amplifier mounted on the the transducer’s connecting cable.  It is housed in a specially-modified IP65-rated diecast enclosure for protection, providing a quick and low cost […]

Digital Multi-Channel Displacement Measurement System Replaces Dial Gauges

Applied Measurements were approached and asked to manufacture a 3-channel digital displacement measurement system to replace an ageing and difficult-to-monitor mechanical system based on dial gauges.  The result was a neat, user-friendly, high accuracy system based on a strain gauge sensing principle and coupled with the very latest digital indication technology, all delivered within 2 weeks and backed up by an expert team of engineers. The basis for the system was the strain gauge-based AML/SGD displacement sensor that has been designed specifically to offer high resolution and accuracy in applications where the more conventional choice a LVDT or potentiometer type sensor does not offer sufficiently precise performance. In this instance a 10mm version of the AML/SGD was calibrated over a […]

S-Beam Load Cells are The Versatile Choice

S-beam load cells are a highly versatile measuring device suitable for measuring a broad range of tensile or compressive loads from a few hundred grams right up to 30 tonnes with very high accuracy (better than 0.05% in most cases). Simple installation and compact size makes the S-beam load cell an ideal choice for many applications including materials testing, suspended hopper weighing, and winch monitoring where the in-line mounting arrangement via 2 female threads makes the machine builders life easy. The majority of our range of s-beam load cells are available ex-stock and are competitively priced.  Custom or modified versions can be provided if required while our catalogue of existing modifications include; miniature (35mm high), waterproof, fully submersible, high temperature […]

New Range of Rotary Torque Transducers

Applied Measurements are pleased to announce exclusive UK distribution of a new range of brushless rotary torque transducers from German manufacturer ETH Messtechnik.  ETH were chosen for the very high performance capabilities and exemplary quality of their torque sensors which will compliment our own existing range of rotary and static types. Initially we have introduced five torque sensors to our range, here is a brief summary of each model: DRBK – A compact and low cost shaft type torque sensor available with capacities from 0-5Nm up to 0-1000Nm, maximum speeds up to 22,000rpm and a ±5Vdc conditioned output signal.  A pulsed speed/RPM output is optional. DRFL – A compact, high performance shaft type torque sensor with an accuracy class of […]
