    Chain link load sensor

This particular customer order is testimony of the power of Search Engine Optimisation marketing. Twenty years ago we wrote a blog about a similar customer request and since then no more chain link strain gauge interest. Until now that is, when a different customer found this twenty year old blog and came to us with their order. Interestingly, although the customer is different, their end application is very similar. The chain that the pictured deliverable above will be part of, will be used in a food processing conveyor system.

Machine breakdowns in the food industry can be very costly, both in terms of fixing and lost orders. Being able to measure the loads that the chain is under at different stages of its operation will be an important part of ensuring this particular machine’s overall longevity and reliability.

This fully calibrated strain gauge will accurately measure load forces up to 1,000kg in tension and comes complete with a 2m cable.

    Stages of manufacture

Chain link load sensor prior to placement of strain gauge
Chain link before strain gauge fitting
Chain link load sensor after strain gauge and temperature compensator has been glued into place
    Strain gauge glued into place
Chain link load sensor after wiring loom has been soldered into place
    Wiring loom soldered into place
completed chain link sensor with a protective hard gel finish
Protective hard gel coating is applied
